This clip helps to illustrate how individual actions are affecting the environment. Most people assume that society, as a whole, is to blame for the environmental problems. By doing this, the responsibility does not fall on each person. The consequence to not accepting that it is individual actions that need addressing, is what got us in this environmental mess in the first place. Placing the blame on others, gives individuals excuses to not address the problem. In the end nothing is getting changed because nobody is willing to take responsibility. It is each persons duty, in order to ensure the world for future generations, to accept the responsibility and take the little steps in changing personal lifestyles. It is the little things that can make big differences and help stride towards more drastic changes.
A website that shows your ecological footprint on the earth is www.footprintnetwork.org. Take the quiz to find out the impact you have on earth. If everyone lived like me we would need 6.7 planet earths to provide enough resources! Accepting responsibility in the matter is the first step towards progress. What is your ecological footprint? What changes can be made in your lifestyle to lower the impact you have on the earth?
Good post. I think climate change and enviornmental issues in general tend to seem like massive problems, and are frequently framed within the context of being caused by forces outside of our direct control (power plants, lack of regulation in emerging industrial nations, etc.). Recognition of climate change as an issue that can be adressed on a local level is important.
This video helped me understand what your topic was going to be about, and I liked how the examples were specific things I can do as an individual to do my part.
This is a good video. I agree, that as an individual you your the only one who can take responsibility for the way you live your life and the type of lifestyle we all choose. Sometimes it may feel that even if you are using resources efficiently, it may feel like its not helping much, but in the long run, if each of us take responsibility we will all see an improvement in the bigger picture!
I like how you ended your post with the quiz, and you yourself took responsibility for your lifestyle and seeing that number really makes me cringe! Since most of us are probably around the same number or more in how much of the earth’s resources we are using.
Good Post!
